La okra, también conocida como "angu" en algunos lugares, es una planta comestible de la familia del algodón y el hibisco. Se caracteriza por sus vainas alargadas y estriadas que contienen pequeñas semillas redondas en su interior. Es apreciada por su sabor único y su textura mucilaginosa cuando se cocina.
La okra se utiliza en una variedad de platos en todo el mundo. Se puede cocinar de muchas maneras, incluyendo salteada, frita, hervida, al vapor o agregada a guisos y sopas. Es un ingrediente esencial en platos como el gumbo (un guiso de origen criollo), el bamia (un guiso de Oriente Medio), y muchas recetas de la cocina del sur de Estados Unidos. También se puede utilizar cruda en ensaladas.
Almacenamiento
La okra fresca debe almacenarse en el refrigerador, preferiblemente en una bolsa de plástico perforada para controlar la humedad. Se recomienda consumirla lo antes posible, ya que tiende a deteriorarse rápidamente.
También se puede congelar después de blanquearla durante unos minutos para conservar su frescura por más tiempo.
